Former UNLV quarterback Matt Sluka sent shockwaves through college football on Wednesday when news broke that he would leave the team as “representations” about the NIL money he would earn were not as promised. Now, there is some clarity on what Sluka was apparently supposed to be making while playing for the Runnin’ Rebels.

Sluka was promised “a minimum” of $100,000, Sluka’s NIL representative, Equity Sports’ Marcus Cromartie, confirmed to On3’s Pete Nakos. To date, per Cromartie, Sluka only got $3000 to relocate to Las Vegas.

Sluka previous played at Holy Cross in Massachusetts, and is from New York.

“During Matt’s recruitment, we talked about a number north of $100,000, to $150,000,” Cromartie told On3. “This was a number that would be given to Matt to come there. We talked about if we could get to $150,000 that would be great, but $100,000 was the number.”

Equity Sports CEO Chris Cabott, also speaking to On3, explained the challenges the college system present in turning a verbal promise into a signed contract.

“At the end of the day, we know a school can’t give a player a contract until he is enrolled,” Cabott said. “That’s the whole reason why Florida State was slapped. We understand that sometimes there is going to be some flexibility. These schools can’t put a term sheet in front of you, they can’t put a contract in front of you. You just have to take people at their word.”

The version of events from Sluka’s NIL management also falls in line with what his father told ESPN.

Sluka’s father has provided clarity on the decision, telling ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg his son never received NIL payments promised by the UNLV staff during his recruitment. He also says Sluka nor the people around him asked for “a single dollar more” than what was originally agreed upon.

Bob Sluka, father of UNLV QB Matthew Sluka, told ESPN that his son’s agents agreed to an NIL deal with the school back in February, never received payments despite requests and never asked for any adjustments to the original deal,” Rittenberg said via X.

“We have no idea what the hell happened,” Bob Sluka said to Rittenberg. “They keep deferring, ‘We don’t know. You have to wait. Then it was like, ‘We’re going to give him game checks.’ So we’re like, ‘OK, great.’ We did not ask for a single dollar [more].”
