College football coaches are back on the recruiting trail to take advantage of the current ‘contact period’ — and Miami head coach Mario Cristobal visited Fort Myers (Fla.) High School to see 2026 four-star defensive lineman Kendall Guervil.

One of the top defensive linemen in the Sunshine State, Guervil is the nation’s No. 160 overall prospect in the 2026 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is the No. 15 DL in the class and the No. 27 recruit from the state of Florida.

Thus far, Guervil has focused most of his visits on two in-state schools: Florida and Miami. He told CaneSport in November that the environment at Miami has kept the Hurricanes in his recruitment.

“It’s pretty good,” Guervil said. “It’s an exciting environment, and overall the coaching, they have a great coach with Jason Taylor and I love how he runs his program over there. It’s kind of similar to the things we do at my school, and I feel like I could adjust to the things they run over there.”

Miami building top-15 class in 2026 cycle

Mario Cristobal & Co. has already picked up three commitments in the 2026 recruiting class. First to pledge to Miami was Miami Carol City top-100 linebacker Jordan Campbell, who committed in November 2023.

Lakeland (Fla.) Jones four-star quarterback Dereon Coleman joined the class back on July 3, and the Hurricanes added Charlotte (N.C.) Myers Park four-star cornerback Camdin Portis on Oct. 27.

Portis, the son of former Miami running back Clinton Portis, grew up a fan of the Hurricanes.

“I watched Miami growing up and always wanted to go to Miami,” Portis told On3. “It is a beautiful place and a great school with a lot of tradition. Miami has had a lot of great players play there and it is on its way back up.”
