Miami‘s Cam Ward is one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the entire country entering the 2024 college football season. Joining the Hurricanes with 44 starts under his belt between his time at Incarnate Word and Washington State along with over 13,000 yards and 100 touchdown passes in his career.

But even ahead of his fifth college football season and first with the Hurricanes, Ward still feels like he has something to prove ahead of his Miami debut this Saturday against Florida in The Swamp of Gainesville. But not to the people on the outside looking in.

“I have a lot to prove to myself, I have a lot to prove to my teammates, and that’s really the only thing that matters to me is my teammates and myself,” Ward said on Wednesday. “So we’re gonna rise to the occasion, we’re gonna be prepared to play.”

There’s no question that a ton of pressure lies on the shoulders of Ward this college football season. Taking center stage at one of college football’s most historic programs that’s desperate to achieve success and regain the national spotlight. Success that many believe has been challenging to attain in recent history because of shortcomings at the quarterback position.

Ward was also tabbed as the Preseason ACC Player of the Year heading into the season, but before securing more accolades for himself and the Hurricanes, he’ll have to overcome a tall task in Week 1 on the road versus the Gators. Who haven’t lost a home opener in 33 years.

“Defensively, Florida, they’re a good defense. From d-line to cornerbacks for sure, to their safety, they’re a good overall defense. They’re gonna be physical with us, we have to match the physicalness and at the end of the day, it’s football,” Ward explained. “Heads are gonna get hot, but we just got to keep our composure and play our brand of football and let the rest take care of itself.”

A level-headed Ward and a revamped Miami roster has the opportunity to secure a signature win to start off the 2024 college football season. Potentially setting the tone in what could be a much needed, breakout season for the Hurricanes that’s been years in the making.
