Conference Realignment Thoughts with JD

The MiamiNotre Dame football series will not be reignited in 2024, according to Miami reporter Barry Jackson.

The 2025 matchup will be played as schedule inside Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, but instead of playing in South Bend in 2024 — the game will be pushed back to 2026 because of a scheduling error on the Hurricanes’ part.

“This solves a [Miami] scheduling conundrum that had emerged in 2024. Miami had 5 non-conference games booked in 2024 and could play only 4, of course: at [Florida] Gators, Florida A&M, Ball State and at USF. Now they don’t need to play both UF and Notre Dame on the road in 2024. Only UF in 2024,” Jackson wrote after the initial report.

Waiting one more year won’t hurt things. Still, some fans are itching to see the once annual matchup swing back into fruiting. The two programs met three times during the 1960s, but from 1971 through 1990 — neither team went a year without meeting in the regular season. Though, they didn’t play in 1986 for some reason.

Many will remember the shirts designed by Irish fans that donned the phrase, “Catholics vs. Convicts,” which should tell you all you need to know about how personal this rivalry got throughout the years.

The two teams played each other on any stage they could. In 1979, the two teams happened to meet in the Mirage Bowl — which was held across the world inside the Tokyo Dome in Japan. The Irish won 40-15 and Vagas Ferguson was named MVP in his final collegiate game.

After taking the year off of the rivalry in ’86, the final four years of the rivalry were as good as it gets. Each matchup saw both teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP Poll and both teams vied for national titles in each of the seasons.

Miami and Notre Dame have met four times in the over three decades since the regular rivalry series was ended in 1990. Notre Dame won first three matchups in 2010, 2012 and 2016, respectively, but Miami claims the final victory in the rivalry series having beaten the Irish 41-8 in 2017.

Barring a bowl meeting in the next two years, it will have been nearly eight years since the two teams crossed paths on the gridiron. Neither with will want to be giving up bragging rights, but if they split the home-and-home matchups in ’25 and ’26 — it would be a hot ticket if both programs could manage to schedule a rubber match at the earliest convenience.
