Bridgewater (Va.) Turner Ashby four-star athlete/receiver Micah Matthews announced his commitment to Virginia Tech on Wednesday evening.

The coveted in-state prospect chose the Hokies over his other finalists in North Carolina, Virginia, BYU and Utah.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Matthews will play baseball and football on the next level and was a one-time South Carolina baseball verbal.

“I’m staying home,” Matthews told On3.

“The way they invited me and my family into their family. The connection I made with Coach (Fontel) Mines. We’ve been tight for awhile. I’d say since seventh grade he’s been scouting me.”

Virginia Tech had a lot of ties to Matthews

Offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen and running backs coach Elijah Brooks helped push Matthews to Blacksburg as well.

“Coach Brooks played my dad in high school. They were able to connect a lot. All these people from the DMV were able to connect and it felt like home from day one.”

The On3 Industry tabs Matthews as the nation’s No. 9 athlete and No. 268 prospect overall. He becomes commit No. 15 for head coach Brent Pry and his staff in the 2025 cycle.

“I think one thing that excites me about this whole process is the direction he’s taking it,” Matthews said of Pry. “The dynasty he’s beginning to build. Everyone wants to come back to Virginia Tech. Everyone wants to stay home and try and be part of something great. I think that’s what he’s doing. He’s bringing back the old Virginia Tech that runs the ACC. I think this year is going to be a big statement with a lot of returning guys and I think this 2025 class is going to be a big statement too.

“I think what he’s doing is amazing. I’m excited to be part of it, especially with this class. All the guys in my class are great guys and I’m really excited.”

Virginia Tech has an exciting plan for Matthews

Matthews says the Virginia Tech coaching staff envisions him playing a similar role to Jaylin Lane.

“Me and Coach (Tyler) Bowen talk day in and day out about how they’re going to get me the ball,” Matthews said, adding he has a Deebo Samuel skillset. “I can play outside, slot, I can be in the backfield. They want to get me the ball in different ways.”
