Michigan, Ohio State commits trade online jabs over recruiting grades

One of the best college football rivalries is also going strong on the recruiting trail. Michigan and Ohio State have both landed big-time commitments — and some of them traded some jabs online this week.

The Buckeyes currently hold the nation’s No. 2-ranked recruiting class from the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Ranking, and the Wolverines sit at No. 6. Both teams have impressive offensive line recruits coming in, as On3’s Hayes Fawcett pointed out on Twitter this week. Fawcett asked who fans would take, and Ohio State commit Ian Moore retweeted it with his thoughts.

Moore is a four-star recruit and the No. 86-ranked prospect in the country from the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He stood his ground, saying Ohio State has the better unit.

“Cmon now,” Moore said in a since-deleted tweet, according to Wolverines Wire. “Hate to start beef but two of those dudes are salty that they didn’t get OSU offers and the other two just didn’t get them. I’ve been to camps with everybody on that list except Marc (Marc’s a dog though) and the Blake kid and I can tell you the Bucks are on top.”

That tweet generated some conversation from Michigan’s group, including three-star offensive lineman Ben Roebuck. He retweeted it and defended the Wolverines’ offensive line, which won the Joe Moore Award for the second straight year, and the staff.

“Always comes down to not having that offer,” Roebuck said. “Michigan’s got the better offensive line and better coaches. Seems like I wasn’t missing out on much… Go blue.”

Roebuck also tweeted a screenshot of Moore’s comments following his visit to Michigan. In his interview, he said the Wolverines have “a great tradition” and UM is “a great school.”

But Moore’s tweet also got the attention of four-star lineman Luke Hamilton, who retweeted it and shared his thoughts on the Buckeyes’ offensive line recruits.

“Lemme sit back and grab some popcorn because this is comical,” Hamilton said with two laughing emojis. “If you take rankings out the picture @marcnavejr is the best o line commit y’all got. @NateBige let’s get the ‘you didn’t even have an offer, they didn’t even want you’ comments going.”

Later, Hamilton tweeted at four-star athlete Boo Carter, who’s considering Michigan, and Carter retweeted it, as well. Moore then made his recruiting pitch, telling Carter to “come to a real program that will actually develop you” along with three chestnut — or buckeye — emojis. He also deleted that tweet.

Hamilton retweeted that one with a comment of his own about the Ohio State secondary.

“Have you seen their secondary lately???” Hamilton tweeted.

It’s another interesting chapter of the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry, and in a year, fans will be gearing up to see the recruits on the field. For now, though, they have their sights set on the 2023 edition of The Game coming up in November.
