East Kentwood (Mich.) High 2026 quarterback Kayd Coffman announced his commitment to Michigan State on Friday night.
The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Coffman chose the Spartans over an offer list that included Ole Miss, Iowa State, Duke and Syracuse among others. He was back in East Lansing in January after attending several games on campus during the fall.
“Definitely just the coaches, how I connected with them,” Coffman said of his decision. “Definitely (quarterbacks) Coach (Jon) Boyer. How I really connected with him on a junior day and how I feel I fit in there and them projecting me and developing me to the next level.”
Coffman becomes commit No. 2 for head coach Jonathan Smith and his staff in the 2026 cycle. He joins athlete target Joey Caudill.
“I definitely think it felt right,” Coffman said. “I’ve been thinking about it since November when they offered. I’ve been thinking about that and praying on it and how I see myself fitting in there. I think we can do special things and that made me excited and made me want to get on board.”
Former Michigan State quarterback Ryan Van Dyke trains Coffman. He has teachers that went to school in East Lansing. He’s been following the Spartans his whole life.
“That tradition of football there,” Coffman said. “Being able to be part of that and bring it back to where it was.”
Offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren and Director of Player Personnel Sean Levy were also impactful in recruiting Coffman to Michigan State.

Scouting new Michigan State commit Kayd Coffman
On3 National Analyst Cody Bellaire loves this pickup for the Spartans.
“Kayd Coffman in my opinion is one of the more toolsy quarterbacks in this 2026 cycle. The way he rips the football and gets the ball out quickly from multiple arm slots perks my ears up when watching his tape. The ball jumps out of his hand well and can throw into tight windows with zip as well as layer the ball over the middle of the field and throw with excellent arc on deep balls. Comfortable passer on the run who can throw off-platform efficiently, loses some zip but can develop as he fills out his frame. Leaner athletic body type that has room for growth but never going to have dense build.
“Really love the athlete as well, participates in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 4×4 for his high school track team. Great pocket mobility and feel for pressure. Can escape and create on his own while still keeping eyes downfield. High ceiling prospect, very excited to see how he looks as he physically develops going into senior season.”
Van Dyke has worked with Coffman since he was 11-years old.
“Our first session was pre-covid,” Van Dyke said. “It was super cold. He was the only one that showed up that day. He did everything we told him to do and he’s done everything since. I think that’s working out him.
“An elite arm. Mentally tough. Disciplined. Detail-oriented. Always wanting to learn. Learn a better way, better method. He’s a sponge. He’s a coach’s dream. He does whatever you tell him to do. I think his footwork has gotten much better. He got involved in track last year on a whim to do something and add value for himself in terms of football. The pushups, the jump rope, all the little things he’s fantastic at. Those are the things most people don’t want to do.”
