Michigan State transfer WR Aziah Johnson commits to North Carolina
Michigan State transfer wide receiver Aziah Johnson committed to North Carolina, his agents at A&P Sports Agency told On3’s Pete Nakos. He’s coming off his second season with the Spartans and is another portal pickup for Bill Belichick.
Johnson appeared in all 12 games this past season, totaling 16 receptions for 276 yards and two touchdowns. That came after four appearances in 2023, although he didn’t record a stat in that time.
Johnson played high school football at Richmond (Va.) Thomas Jefferson, where he was tabbed as a three-star prospect and the No. 920 overall player in America, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Aziah Johnson is the latest transfer addition for Belichick, who’s taking over as North Carolina head coach after a decorated career in the NFL. The Tar Heels now have eight commits through the first part of the portal window, including Chad Lindberg. The former Rice offensive tackle came in as the No. 14-ranked OT to hit the open market so far this cycle, according to the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings.

North Carolina also landed an important piece from the high school recruiting world. Elite quarterback Bryce Baker was a top target when Mack Brown was in charge of the program, and keeping his commitment was a priority for Belichick. Baker signed with the Tar Heels last week and attended a UNC basketball game with his new coach, marking an important recruiting win for Belichick in the early days of his tenure.
Baker is one of the top quarterback prospects from the 2025 cycle. A four-star prospect, he is the No. 93 overall player and No. 10-ranked quarterback in the class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
“I asked all the hard questions I wanted,” Baker told On3’s Steve Wiltfong. “Asked a lot of serious questions. Not just about me, but plan for the team, recruiting. I asked him about his plans to change the culture at North Carolina. He just explained how he was going to run it like an NFL place. He knows there’s differences in college and the NFL but he will have that next-level accountability he’s going to hold the team to. I think that’s going to help with the culture shift.”
