Michigan will begin its 2024 season with Davis Warren as the starting quarterback, Sherrone Moore told Todd Blackledge of NBC. Warren took the field for warmups working with the starting offensive line, indicating the move that then later became official. The competition was mainly between Alex Orji and Warren, with Jack Tuttle — who is inactive for today’s game — also in the mix.

It was a battle to replace last year’s national champion-winning QB JJ McCarthy. Now the current quarterback has a lot to live up to compared to what McCarthy accomplished. In order to do that, it is pretty clear as to what Michigan quarterbacks have to do, according to Moore.

“He will take care of the football,” Moore said. “He will be a team player. He’ll be a playmaker, but he’ll put winning first.

“I mean, all those guys have all the attributes you need to be a successful starting quarterback at the University of Michigan and a lot of other universities,” Moore said at Big Ten Media Days. “And we’re super blessed to have all those guys. Everybody has their own traits and their own things that make them a little different.

“But I think the number one thing we’re looking for out of any guy that is our starting quarterback is one, that they’re a playmaker that they can make plays, that they’ll make the right decision, they’ll take care of the football, and that they want to win and they’ll do anything for the team to win. So really, we’re gonna look for those attributes and then go from there.”

Orji appeared in six games last season, rushing 15 times for one touchdown and 86 yards. The veteran going into the season was Tuttle, who spent the first four years of his college career at Indiana before coming to Michigan in 2023.

Tuttle has a career stat line of 1,031 yards, six touchdowns, six interceptions and a 59.8% completion percentage across 21 game appearances.

Warren goes into his third year with the program but has only thrown nine passes in his career. The Wolverines also have a freshman quarterback, Jadyn Davis. He came to Michigan as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2024, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He was the eighth-ranked quarterback in the class.
