PICKING Oklahoma State vs Utah | Big 12 BATTLE between Ollie Gordon and Cam Rising

Mike Gundy doesn’t want to go anywhere anytime soon as the Oklahoma State coach might have to be forced out.

He’s one of the longest tenured coaches in college football, coaching the Cowboys since 2005. Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz has a few years on him though, coaching Iowa since 1999.

Gundy was asked if he could outlast the Hawkeyes’ coach, who’s 69 years at this point. Gundy’s currently 57.

“I’m going to coach until I don’t wake up and I’m like, I don’t really want to go to work,” Gundy said. “Then I think it’s a fair time to say that I’m not going to do it anymore. I don’t know how Kirk is. I’m going to guess mid 60s, but I’m not sure. I think Kyle (Whittingham) is 62. We talked about that in the preseason … But either way, no, I hadn’t thought about that side of it. Just keep going until somebody around here runs me off, which could happen at any time.”

Gundy is 169-79 in his career, including a 3-0 start this season. He’s won one Big 12 title (2011) and been to three other conference title games.

He led Oklahoma State to a career best No. 7 AP Poll ranking at the end of the 2021 season as well.

You have to go back to 2005 to find Gundy’s last losing season. Well, that was his only losing season, a 4-7 campaign.

Oklahoma State begins Big 12 play this weekend when the Cowboys host new member Utah. Gundy knows how big this one is, considering the Utes are No. 12 and OKST is No. 14 in the latest AP Poll.

Gundy has a lot of respect for fellow veteran Kyle Whittingham, who’s been coaching Utah since 2004. Utah named Morgan Scalley the coach in waiting, which could mean Whittingham’s time is done after this season or perhaps after 2025.

But for Gundy, expect him repping the Pokes for quite a while longer.
