Mike Gundy questions the impact of winning games on recruiting due to 'business side' of college football
Mike Gundy doesn’t really know where to go with recruiting amid the NIL era at this point. The Oklahoma State head coach was asked what Saturday’s upcoming matchup with Arkansas means for recruiting.
The states aren’t that far, but Gundy essentially brushed off the question and gave more of a philosophical answer.
“The business side of what we’re getting into, I don’t know anymore,” Gundy said. “I think the business side, based on the same thing we talked about over and over, if she signs off on what we think she’s going to sign off on, recruiting will be limited, negotiating will be prominent.”
NIL is no doubt a big part of recruiting and the transfer portal. Does a win over Arkansas necessarily mean Oklahoma State will get a leg up on recruiting? Maybe, maybe not.
Gundy might’ve questioned recruiting wins and where the sport is going amid NIL, but there’s no doubt the Cowboys’ coach supports players earning their keep.

Gundy was all for his players wearing QR codes on their helmets to help support NIL. However, the NCAA put the kibosh on that.
Gundy still doesn’t quite understand the involvement by the NCAA however.

“They called me and said that the NCAA had met and said it was a uniform violation,” Gundy said. “And that it was punishable by the players being suspended if we put the QR codes on the helmets. Now, I read the rule. I think it’s judgmental based on if it ever went to a court of law. It’s pretty vague, and all we’re trying to do is the most we can do to maximize our players opportunities with fans across the world that don’t have a chance to be involved if they’re not local, and they felt like that, it was a uniform violation, because it had a social media handle to it.
“Which, in my opinion, is not because there’s nothing that has anything to do with the social media on the QR code. We had it everywhere. So you can do it. Yeah, we had it. We have it.”
