Mike Norvell addresses the importance of having continuity on staff
Florida State head coach Mike Norvell enters his third season with the Seminoles this year, as he’s looking to not only continue to improve their record, but re- establish a winning culture. Norvell spoke recently about how keeping continuity within his staff is an important factor in what he’s trying to build at FSU.
“It’s been great and one of the things with out program is continuity has been important, it’s really something that we’ve needed. And we’ve talked about the amount of change that the program has seen over the last few years and even with guys that got other opportunities and are at different places, been able to have that continuity within with coach Shannon and coach Tokarz and coach Atkins becoming the OC,” Norvell said.
Success and failure in college football can both result in coaching turnover, and Norvell elaborated on how important retaining a staff is in the development of his players and establishing an identity as a position group.
“The comfort in expectation and understanding of at a position and also just collectively as a group, I think that helps accelerate the process for our guys and there’s no slowdown in growth and I think we’ve seen a lot of development. We needed to see a lot development, we’ve been one of the youngest team in college football the last few years and we needed to see that those continued steps and it’s something that I believe has really helped us. And I love what I’ve seen in the preparation throughout fall camp,” Norvell said.

Norvell also talked about the ability he’s had during his time with the Seminoles to expand and grow his staff and the impact that has had on the betterment of his players.
“When it comes to expanding the staff, I think it’s been important. We’ve been able to add a couple of roles whether it’s in personnel, scouting, different areas. There’s not a magic number in staff, we just want the right number of personnel and people that are here to support our student-athletes to provide us the best opportunity to go out there and play at an elite level. And I’m grateful for how everybody’s been able to come in and the way we’ve been able to efficiently operate together and excited for that to go into play here this week on top of the all of the other things we’ve done leading up throughout this year already,” Norvell said.
It’s game week for Florida State, as they are one of the few teams in the country playing in week 0 and take on Duquesne at home on August 27.
