Mike Norvell apologizes to FSU fans after loss to Boston College, 0-2 start
The Florida State Seminoles, despite entering the 2024 season with high expectations, have started 0-2 after dropping their first two games to ACC opponents Georgia Tech and Boston College. For head coach Mike Norvell, the start has left him going back to the drawing board.
Following the more recent loss to Boston College, Norvell began his post-game press conference by apologizing to FSU fans and putting the team’s struggles on his own shoulders.
“First off, congratulations to Boston College,” Mike Norvell said. “They did a good job tonight. They obviously came in and did the things they needed to do to win the game. For us, I’m just sick to how this season started. Obviously, tonight I failed in preparing the team to be able to go out and respond tonight. The things that were necessary for us, the things we talked about, the things we emphasized, obviously, in all phases, we’re not able to execute. Obviously, didn’t put them in position to showcase what I believe this football team is. It’s extremely disappointing. I apologize to our fans, apologize to everybody associated with the program.”
From early in Florida State’s home opener, Boston College seemed to be in control of this game. That was particularly because of how well the Eagles ran the ball. Boston College had 263 yards on the ground to Florida State’s 21 rushing yards. That contributed to the Eagles holding the ball for 39.03 and limiting the Seminoles’ possessions. With that, Florida State fell 28-13.

“That was extremely disappointing that we’re not better,” Norvell said. “A lot of factors go into it, all phases we just weren’t good. They had possession the entire first quarter. We went three and out our first three drives, offensively. They capitalized on third downs. Our third down the execution was extremely poor. They ran the ball, we didn’t, and we had some missed opportunities, had some chances in the game to be able to take a step and we made mistakes that were, obviously extremely costly and they capitalized on it.”

The 0-2 start puts Mike Norvell and the Seminoles in a difficult position. It’s going to be difficult to make it to the College Football Playoff now, especially since these were both conference losses so winning the ACC is potentially off the table.
“It comes down to me and it comes down to me being able to prepare this team to go out there and be able to play to the capabilities that I believe that they have. You’ve got a football team that’s hurting. You’ve got a football team that nobody ever envisions being where we are and having disappointment and having failure,” Norvell said.
“I do believe in can do. I believe in what this team can accomplish. I’ve got to get better. I’ve got to prepare them better. And we’ve got to do everything in our power to be able to apply the things that we’re emphasizing throughout the course of the week through the course of the game.”
Now, Mike Norvell and Florida State will look to restart with a bye week before hosting Memphis. That’s Norvell’s old team and it’s now a vital game.
