Mike Norvell holding players to Florida State standard through struggles
The 2024 season has started disastrously for Florida State. Sitting at 0-3, head coach Mike Norvell is obviously as disappointed as the rest after beginning the season ranked No. 10, but he also knows his team has rarely played up to standard so far.
While this is obviously troubling in the present moment, it also presents and opportunity for Norvell and Co. to get this team playing at a much higher level. And that, Norvell said, it about playing up to the standard of Florida State football.
“Everything that you see that’s on the field is a reflection of us,” Norvell said. “When it comes to the transition of things going from practice to the game, it is a challenge for us. We’ve gotta continue to evaluate what are we doing, how are we doing it, continue to make sure that the preparation aspect, the emphasis is showing up and showing the characteristics of each position, each side of the ball and ultimately this football. I’m responsible for all of that. So we have a standard and an identity of what we want for this team to be and I’ve not seen that be put on display, consistently throughout the course of a game. You have some flash moments, some flash plays. But we spend a lot of time, 365 days a year in how we prepare and I want that to show up on game day, to truly be who I know that we are.”
And as Norvell tries to find ways to get the message to land with his players, he recognizes that he and his staff might need to change tact in certain moments.

No two players are the same, and the Florida State staff would do well to start getting the coaching to sink in and get this roster playing up to the standard Norvell has put forth, whatever that might take.
“It’s about the connection. And we don’t coach every player the exact same way,” Norvell said. “And there’s different ways of being able to make the connection. You might have to — it’s why you always evaluate your process with each player. Now, there is an expectation of how guys are to perform, how guys are to play. But you might have to change, some guys are maybe more visual learners. Some guys might do better walking through. Some guys on the board and some can just hear it and be able to apply it. So, just make sure that we’re doing all that we can as coaches to make that connection and to make sure that that can translate to what we’re doing on game day.”
