Mike Norvell insists his coaching approach has not changed amid 0-2 start

Mike Norvell and Florida State were on an absolute roll as a program until quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a devastating injury and the program rolled into the Orange Bowl against Georgia down a couple quarterbacks and with a ton of opt-outs.

It’s been three straight losses since, with the Seminoles falling to both Georgia Tech and Boston College to open the 2024 season.

Coach Mike Norvell remains steadfast in his approach, though.

“My focus has never been, never, like I don’t care 19 games (in a row), 13-0, it’s never been about the things that are all 10 steps ahead,” Norvell said. “It’s about today. It’s about going out there and getting better today. It’s about going out there and being the best that we can be.”

Florida State does still have plenty of football in front of it, with 10 more games remaining. In theory, they could win them all and potentially be right there in playoff contention, though that remains a long shot.

Norvell isn’t even dialed into that, though. Instead, he wants his team honed in on the day-to-day.

“That’s one of the things that talking to the team about is there’s so many distractions that are out there,” Mike Norvell said. “‘Well is it mathematically possible for us to do this?’ No, just go play your best today. If you worry about what’s down the road, you’re missing out on the opportunity, the joy, all the things. Because everything’s with the end in mind. Focus on now. Like make the most of today on what’s going to be — you play well, you get better, you do all the things.

“Whether it’s (what) a team’s record is going to be at the end of the year, whether it’s you get drafted, whether awards, recognitions you get, that will all take care of itself. But it’s still about today and having the joy to go and execute to the best of your ability and put yourself in a position to be victorious in the moment. That’s been my message since we got here. And it’s disappointing to start a season where we’ve not played our best.”

That said, Mike Norvell isn’t giving up on his team. Not at all. Ups and downs are just the nature of college football.

Florida State didn’t bring it the last two weeks and it got beat. Simple as that. Want to fix it? Just play better.

“You’ve got to give credit to the teams we’ve played that have done the job necessary,” Mike Norvell said. “We’ve found ourselves and put ourselves in some challenging situations, but it’s still about the response that we have. I stand in front of you today and I’ve got confidence in this team.

“I believe in them. I believe in what we can do. I believe as we grow, as we become more consistent in that, as we do a better job as coaches in putting them in those positions, because we’re still getting to see this team. I mean every opportunity, and we’ve lost two games and I don’t want to waste those losses. I want to make sure that we use those losses to help us be better today. Nobody ever wants to lose. It’s sickening. But if you can learn, you can take advantage and you can work and get better you’ve got an opportunity to take a step. That’s what we’re looking to do as a football team and that’s been the message since the very first day I came here.”
