Mike Norvell pressed on if he considered benching DJ Uiagalelei in Boston College loss
In what turned out to be a horrible Monday night for Florida State, Mike Norvell decided against making in-game changes. Despite the Doak Campbell Stadium crowd chanting Brock Glenn‘s name, Norvell stuck with DJ Uiagalelei at quarterback throughout the Boston College loss.
When asked about his decision to not bench Uiagalelei, Norvell instead took the opportunity to use some coach speak. He believes the Florida State coaching staff needs to focus on putting players in the right position to succeed. Norvell’s main goal is finding a way to make sure the Seminoles improve.
“We were struggling offensively,” Norvell said during his postgame presser. “There were a lot of reasons for that. Everything that we’re doing, we got to push and get better. That’s what we’re going to focus on doing. We’re going to focus on pushing to get better. We’re going to put our guys in position to achieve success and that’s what we’re going to focus on.”
Uiagalelei finished with 272 yards, a touchdown, and an interception on the night while completing 50% of his 42 pass attempts. Sure, there were some drops but a few throws should have been automatic from the fifth-year quarterback.

Some positive flashes were shown down the stretch of the fourth quarter, something Norvell highlighted in his comments. But early on, the passing game was not doing anything to help the team’s flow.

“There’s not much that did click,” Norvell said. “We struggled to win one-on-ones early. We had times where they were getting pressure, we missed a throw, or missed an opportunity to catch, and try to find a rhythm offensively. We weren’t able to do that very well. I think we did get into that a little later as we were rolling. Had a couple of explosive plays that showed up.”
Florida State has a bye week ahead of them after playing two games before Week 1 was officially completed. Memphis is next up on the schedule, with Norvell’s old program coming to Tallahassee in what instantly becomes a must-win for the ‘Noles.
There’s plenty to work on but getting off to a quick pace on offense, no matter who the quarterback is, appears to be the main goal from the head coach.
“We’ve got to be able to start fast,” Norvell said. “We’ve got to be able to go out there and compete and to be able to win our one-on-ones, to execute through progressions. We’ve got to be able to protect. And then obviously, we got to have balance in the run game.”
