Miller Moss breaks down LSU's recruitment of him, relationship with Garrett Nussmeier
When LSU and USC hit the field on Sunday night in Las Vegas, a lot will be on the line. And there’s some familiarity between Trojans quarterback Miller Moss and Tigers signal-caller Garrett Nussmeier.
The two have exchanged text messages here and there over the years after competing against each other on the high school circuit as recruits.
“I knew him a little bit,” Moss said Tuesday in an interview with local reporters. “Obviously we were both recruited by LSU pretty tough. But I knew him through Elite 11 and stuff like that. He was always a good kid that loved ball and obviously a good player, so excited to see him.”
Both will face their unique challenges in assuming the starting role after a Heisman Trophy winner most recently manned the gig. Gone is Caleb Williams at USC and off to the NFL is Jayden Daniels at LSU.

Despite the connection between Miller Moss and Garrett Nussmeier, the pleasantries have been non-existent this week. The two haven’t spoken in months.
“He texted me, ‘Happy Birthday,'” Moss said with a laugh. “Besides that… and that was like six months ago.”

Moss, of course, will be looking to prove he was appropriately ranked as a high school prospect. He’s had big expectations placed on him, a former four-star prospect and a top-250 recruit in the 2021 class.
For a while, LSU was in the mix for his services. The Tigers and Miller Moss both went their separate ways, though.
“I mean I think they were down there in like the last five in my recruiting process,” Moss said. “I think they obviously just had a ton of recent success coming off that national championship throughout my sophomore year of high school. So it was obviously an attractive program that had won pretty recently. So they were up there, I don’t know if I was ever really going to go there. But they were definitely up there at the end.”
Come Sunday, Miller Moss won’t be looking to make nice with Garrett Nussmeier. Or the Tigers. It’s winner take all in one of the biggest games on the opening-weekend slate.
The two teams are set for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff, with a national broadcast on ABC and ESPN+.
