Minnesota upsets No. 20 Michigan behind Dawson Garcia buzzer-beater in overtime
Minnesota power forward Dawson Garcia pulled off some impressive heroics on Thursday night to lift the Golden Gophers to victory over the No. 20 Michigan Wolverines. In overtime, Garcia heaved a deep three-point shot from the M logo on the Minnesota floor, draining a 40-footer at the buzzer to lift the Golden Gophers to an 84-81 victory.
It’s the Golden Gophers’ first win over a Top 25 team since 2021.
Following the game, Garcia spoke with the Big Ten Network about what was going through his head on the final seconds of overtime.
“I’m just yelling Cye’s name (Lu’Cye Patterson) just because if I get it, it’s cash. So, I was just really yelling Cye’s name the whole time. About the sixth or seventh time, I yelled his name. He seen me. And I knocked it down,” Garcia said.
Minnesota finished with three players in double figures, and they all scored over 20 points each: Dawson Garcia (27 points), Mike Mitchell Jr. (20 points), and Lu’Cye Patterson (22 points). Garcia stuffed the stat sheet with 27 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and three steals. He also had two blocks. He hit two of his seven three-pointers, the biggest of which of course came in the final seconds of overtime.
Minnesota hit 9 of their 29 shots from beyond-the-arc (31.0%). Mike Mitchell Jr. hit nearly half of those, drilling four of his twelve attempts. Lu’Cye Patterson connected on three of five shots from downtown. Minnesota also hit 33 of 73 shots from the field (45.2%).

Michigan had four players chip in double digits: Vladislav Goldin (18 points), Danny Wolf (23 points), Tre Donaldson (14 points), and Will Tschetter (15 points). And the Wolverines finished 11 of 22 from three-point range (50%). Goldin chipped in eight rebounds, whereas Danny Wolf had a double-double, finishing with 10 rebounds and seven assists on the night.
Minnesota actually trailed 40-31 at halftime, but outscored the Wolverines 40-31 in the second half to send it to overtime. And the Golden Gophers won the overtime period 13-10.
In the final seconds of overtime, Michigan’s Danny Wolf spun to the hoop and made a close range two. That tied it with seven seconds left in overtime. That’s when Lu’Cye Patterson brought the ball up the floor, and found Garcia for the game-winner from 40-feet.
With the loss, Michigan dropped to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten. Minnesota improved to 9-9 overall and 1-6 in the Big Ten.
