Mississippi State linebacker John Lewis plans to enter the transfer portal, he tells On3. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound redshirt junior will have one year of eligibility remaining.

A former four-star and top-200 recruit has recorded 44 career tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and a pass deflection. The Canton, Mississippi, native made three starts in 2023 and notched a career-high 20 tackles in 12 games. He mainly played on the line of scrimmage but moved back to linebacker this season.

Mississippi State closed out the season last weekend, losing 26-14 in the Egg Bowl. Head coach Jeff Lebby closes out his first season in Starkville with a 2-10 record.

The transfer portal officially opens on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers. That means roughly 25% of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year.
