Mississippi State linebacker Ty Cooper plans to enter the transfer portal, he tells On3. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound linebacker will have one year of eligibility remaining.
The Louisville, Mississippi, native, has posted 55 career tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. The former four-star recruit had his best season in 2024, tallying 29 tackles. He’s moved around during his time at Mississippi State, too, playing on the line and at linebacker. He also had a stint working with the tight ends in 2023 as the Bulldogs were short on numbers.
Mississippi State closed out the season last weekend, losing 26-14 in the Egg Bowl. Head coach Jeff Lebby closes out his first season in Starkville with a 2-10 record.

Ty Cooper picked up several offers from over 20 schools throughout his high school recruitment, including Colorado, Illinois, Memphis, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Texas and Vanderbilt. He helped win a state title in high school while tallying 112 total tackles, 12 sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception.
The transfer portal officially opens on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers. That means roughly 25% of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year.
