Dan Mullen announces he'll be in the ESPN booth for 2023 Egg Bowl
Former Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen will once again be a part of the Egg Bowl this season.
Mullen announced on The Stingray Show that he will call the rivalry matchup between Ole Miss and Mississippi State for ESPN this fall. He will be joined in the booth by ESPN play-by-play broadcaster Matt Barrie.
“Matt and I will be calling the Thursday night games. We’ve got the first one coming up here in Memphis in a couple of weeks,” Mullen said. “Most importantly… I get to call the Egg Bowl this year. So that will be a really special deal for me. I’ll be back in Starkville calling the Egg Bowl Thanksgiving weekend.”
Dan Mullen was the head coach at Mississippi State from 2009-2017 and coached in the Egg Bowl every year during that time. He had a 69-46 mark as the head coach at Mississippi State, including a 33-39 record in SEC play.
This year’s matchup between Ole Miss and Mississippi State is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN and as Mullen said, it will be played in Starkville. Mullen was 5-4 against Ole Miss during his nine seasons leading the Bulldogs. That includes a 3-2 mark at home.
After nine seasons at Mississippi State, Mullen took over the Florida program in November of 2017 and led the Gators for nearly four seasons, before being fired in November of 2021 as Florida had a 5-6 record.

Mississippi State football honors Mike Leach with special signature and logo on its sidelines
A couple of years after Dan Mullen left for the Florida job, Mississippi State brought in another offensive-minded head coach in Mike Leach.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs lost one of the all-time treasures in college football this offseason when Leach passed away.
Mississippi State honored Leach this past weekend in its opener against Southeastern Louisiana.
It was a fitting tribute to the legendary head coach. It’s just one of the many different tributes that we’ve seen across the college football landscape and beyond.
Mississippi State has moved forward with Zach Arnett as their new head coach. He was previously the defensive coordinator under Leach. The Bulldogs return one of the most prolific passers in all of college football in Will Rogers. He’s shattered numerous records already throughout his career and will look to do even more of that in 2023.
The Bulldogs kicked off their 2023 season on Saturday, beating Southeastern Louisiana 48-7.
