Monmouth guard Abdi Bashir has entered the NCAA transfer portal. He spent the past two seasons with the Fighting Scots and will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

Bashir made a massive jump between his freshman and sophomore seasons to go from averaging 6.3 points to 20.1. He also put up 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game this past season while shooting 38.3% from 3-point range.

The 6-foot-7 guard played his high school basketball for Phoenix Prep in Arizona, but was unranked in the 2023 cycle. His hometown is Omaha, Nebraska.

Bashir played all 33 games as a true freshman at Monmouth and shot 38.9% on his 3-pointers. He moved into the starting lineup this past season, where he thrived to gain the attention of the rest of the country.

Abdi Bashir earned first team All-CAA honors this past season for his performance. He was the only Monmouth player to make any of the all-conference teams as the Fighting Scots finished fifth in the conference with a 10-8 league record.

Based on his improvement from this past season, Bashir is sure to have a number of Power 4 schools fighting to add him to their roster. It will be interesting to see how his recruitment goes as he will be a hot commodity in the transfer portal.

The college basketball transfer portal is starting to mirror the NBA’s free agency. Last spring alone, 1,962 Division I players tested the portal waters.

The college basketball transfer portal is now scheduled for 30 days during the spring of the 2024-25 academic year. The portal will open after the second round of the NCAA Tournament and conclude before the end of April. Athletes would still be given a 30-day window to transfer after a head coach’s departure.

According to the NCAA, the portal opens for business on Monday, March 24, and closes on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The national championship game will be played on April 7 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

In data gathered over the first two years with transfer windows, the NCAA found most athletes enter the portal within the first four weeks of the portal opening. The study showed that 73% of men’s and women’s basketball undergraduate athletes entered during the first four weeks. That increased to 82% for men and 86% for women in 2024.
