Multiple Florida fans arrested for rushing the field after upset of Texas

Most top-ten upsets by a home team would lead to a field storming. That wasn’t the case on Saturday in The Swamp, though, with stadium security handling anyone who took the field following Florida’s win over No. 9 Texas.
After the 29-21 win for the Gators over the Longhorns, videos emerged and have been posted of personnel arresting people on the field inside Ben Hill Griffin. This clip, posted by Kevin O’Donnell at Fox 13 in Tampa Bay, among others, shows at least two fans, the main one focused on looking to be no older than a teenager, being put into handcuffs and escorted out.
20 WCJB in Gainesville also reported the arrests of four more fans in attendance. Those four men have reportedly been released but each face trespassing charges for their actions.
Florida is a school that has enforced a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to access to their playing fields. Even yesterday, the Gators again showed a sign on the video boards reminding fans to “stay off the field” or else that “violators will be arrested”. Based on these pieces of news, these specific fans get that message.

The Southeastern Conference has also gotten more serious with its policies regarding field or court storming. The SEC, back in May at the league’s spring meetings, will enforce a $500,000 fine every time a school’s fanbase accesses the playing surface, as ““institutions shall limit access to competition areas to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly credentialed or authorized individuals at all times for the safety of participants and spectators alike”, at no time before, during or after a contest may spectators enter the competition area”. That’s after the fines had previously on a scale of $100,000, then $250,000, and then $500,000 for a third offense and every one thereafter.
That said, if any Gators’ fans were to storm the field, this was a fair pick by those offenders. That’s as Florida, coming in having lost three straight, upset Texas in the eight-point win. They led by as much as 15 as both units put on one of their better performances of the season against the Longhorns, which improved their record to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the SEC.
