Just before Clemson got on the board with a field goal against Georgia on Saturday, Bulldogs fans held their collective breath. Mykel Williams left the field after a low block from Tigers running back Phil Mafah, creating concern about an injury.

It was later deemed an ankle injury, according to ESPN’s Molly McGrath. Williams also said he plans to play through it, but he’ll be under a close watch from the UGA staff.

“Georgia star defensive player Mykel Williams had his left ankle wrapped,” McGrath said on the ABC broadcast. “He was in visible discomfort when he jogged and I can tell he’s in pain. He was talking to teammates about that Mafah block, and that’s what happened and hurt his left ankle. But I’m told he’s going to try to play, but they’re going to monitor it closely, guys.”

McGrath later provided another update in the fourth quarter. She reported Williams went back to the locker room to get further checked out.

“Georgia d-lineman Mykel Williams is back in their locker room for further evaluation,” McGrath said. “Remember, he previously suffered a left ankle injury late in the third quarter. He was favoring that left leg when he walked back to the locker room. He’s not on their sideline right now. I’m told, he’s out for now.”

Williams had a strong game through the first three quarters of Saturday’s season opener. He had two tackles – both for loss – as the Georgia defense kept Clemson out of the end zone. The third-quarter field goal was the first time the Tigers scored.

Williams’ injury happened just before Dillon Bell headed to the locker room. However, the ABC broadcast confirmed he was dealing with cramps. Defensive lineman Warren Brinson also left in the first quarter and wasn’t likely to return after suffering an ankle injury.

Defense was the name of the game for both Georgia and Clemson in the first half. However, the Bulldogs game out firing after the break as Carson Beck found Colbie Young for a 7-yard touchdown to start the third quarter. Nate Frazier then added another touchdown to the UGA lead when he punched in a one-yard score.

It’s safe to say UGA took Kirby Smart’s message to heart at halftime. He said the Bulldogs had to play their game, and that’s what they did through the third quarter.
