A little over two months ago, Dacula (Ga.) Hebron Christian Academy wide receiver Gerritt Kemp committed to Duke He took his official visit to Durham, loved the feeling and committed to the Blue Devils.

At the time, Kemp committed to Duke over Michigan State and Ole Miss, the schools he took official visits to. NC State was involved too. He visited Raleigh twice, the staff never gave up and Kemp has flipped his commitment to the Wolfpack.

“NC State was one of my first offers, and I liked them a lot, then when I committed to Duke, they never stopped recruiting me,” Kemp told On3. “When I called coach Dave Doeren about my commitment to Duke, he told me they weren’t going to stop recruiting me, and they didn’t.

“Things can change and they did. They stayed consistent, they reached out to me a lot and that made a big difference. They reached out more to me than Duke did at times and I changed my decision to NC State.”

Making the flip on his commitment is not the only change. Kemp committed to Duke to play wide receiver. He is now going to NC State to play cornerback.

“I fell in love with defensive back in fall camp preparing for this season. Getting back on the defensive side of the ball excites me. It just felt right and where I belong. NC State wanted me to play defense, they stayed on me and now I am going there to play defense.”

Doeren and Brian Mitchell never gave up. They stayed in contact, they showed Kemp he was important to them and now the No. 46 athlete in the country is looking forward to his time in Raleigh.

“NC State is a great school in a great place. The coaches think I can thrive there on defense and that I can fit into their defense. My dream is to get to the NFL and I think I have the best chance to do that on defense. There are great coaches at NC State and it is a place I see myself thriving in.”
