The West Virginia Mountaineers lost a heartbreaker in the Backyard Brawl on Saturday to the Pitt Panthers, 38-34. It’s one of the more heated rivalries in college football and we got a great example of that in the postgame interviews from both coaches. Initially, Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said that the Panthers had to not only beat WVU, but the officials as well. And once West Virginia head coach Neal Brown heard was asked about his remarks in the postgame press conference, he let everyone know his unfiltered thoughts.

Neal Brown on Pat Narduzzi and his postgame comments

“Yeah, I think that’s bulls***. I thought the officials, we can say what we want to, but the officials, you know I’m not real pleased with them either,” Brown explained. “But I don’t know about that. You’ll never hear me blame the officials or anything. I disagree with calls, but it’s a really hard game to officiate.”

“Going back to the question you were asking about Narduzzi. They did a really good job. I’m not pleased with the officials, either. I feel his pain on that. But I don’t necessarily think they beat them. You know, we’re the one that got a long touchdown called back,” Brown explained.

Here is the specific question that Narduzzi was asked after the game and how he answered.

The reporter asked him, you told us you challenged your defense and your secondary in this one. How do you think they answered that?

“I think our DBs did a heck of a job, period. Some of the calls we got, late hit out of bounds. Catching balls and they hit them in the face. I’ve never seen anything like it. You know? Wow. We beat West Virginia in the Backyard Brawl and we beat the officials, too in one game,” Narduzzi explained.

Both WVU quarterback Garrett Greene and Pitt quarterback Eli Holstein played pretty well. Greene had over 250 all-purpose yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He had a costly interception in the final seconds of the game, sealing the comeback victory for the Pitt Panthers.

Holstein was phenomenal for the Panthers, with one of his most critical plays coming late in the fourth quarter. Holstein had a great run where he eluded a couple of WVU defenders in the pocket, scampering down 24 yards to get the Panthers inside the red zone. From there, the Pittsburgh offensive punched the ball in with 32 seconds left, thanks to a one-yard plunge by running back Derrick Davis, Jr. That put the Panthers up 38-34 in what would be the final score of the game.
