The New England Patriots have formally announced that they have hired Bill O’Brien as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Reports of the move were first reported on Tuesday.

This will be Bill O’Brien’s second stint as the offensive coordinator in New England, previously running the offense in 2011. He held several roles with the Patriots’ offense between 2007 and 2011, and is a Massachusetts native.

Bill O’Brien left the Patriots to become the Penn State head coach, replacing Joe Paterno. From there, he moved on to the Houston Texans, where he was the head coach between 2014 and 2019. In 2021, he joined the Alabama staff where he helped coach quarterback Bryce Young to a Heisman Trophy.

“I am looking forward to working with Bill again,” said Bill Belichick. “He is an outstanding coach and an asset to our staff.

Bill O’Brien is replacing the Joe Judge and Matt Patricia tandem that struggled in 2022. The biggest task for O’Brien is going to be to get young quarterback Mac Jones’ career back on the tracks and develop him for the future.

The Patriots finished in the top 10 in offense every year during O’Brien’s first tenure with the Patriots.
