New Mexico QB Devon Dampier plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he told On3’s Hayes Fawcett. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Dampier put together a breakout season in 2024, throwing for 2,768 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also ran for 1,166 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground to cement himself as a true dual-threat in his first season under Bronco Mendenhall.

Dampier played high school football at Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 1,683 overall player from the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Dampier spent the 2023 season behind Dylan Hopkins on the New Mexico depth chart, but put together some big performances this past year. One of his biggest came against Washington State when he threw for 174 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 193 yards and three scores on the ground to lead New Mexico to the victory.

Devon Dampier also shared a message on his social media about his decision to enter the portal. He thanked Mendenhall and the New Mexico faithful for the two years he spent in Albuquerque.

“I’m very thankful to have had the opportunity to play football for the University of New Mexico,” Dampier wrote. “I appreciate the time, passion and energy Coach Mendenhall and all of my coaches poured into me, and the lifelong brotherhood that I formed with my teammates. We left it all on the field, and I will forever be grateful for this experience.

“Lobo Nation, the love and support you have shown me both on and off the field has made Albuquerque a home. Thank you for taking me in and making me a part of your family! After much consideration and conversations with my family and those closest to me, I have decided to enter the transfer portal. I will miss you all, but am excited for the next two years of my journey.”
