New Mexico is 3-0 so far on the season, including a victory over SMU on Tuesday. The Lobos are in their second season under head coach Richard Pitino and went put up a 13-19 overall record last year, including a 5-12 mark in Mountain West play. They’re trying to make it back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.
New Mexico State has only played two games, going 1-1 with a lone victory over NM Highlands before falling to UTEP on Saturday. The Aggies underwent a coaching change this offseason when Chris Jans took over at Mississippi State and opted to name Greg Heiar their new headman. Heiar spent the last two years at the JUCO level with Northwest Florida State, where he helped lead the program to an NJCAA national championship last year.
