New Mexico trolls Michigan in release of depth chart before Week 1 matchup

New Mexico is poking the bear ahead of its Week 1 showdown against No. 14 Michigan. On Tuesday, the Lobos’ official X account posted a depth chart that included fake lineups, littered with famous movie roles of actors Tom Hanks, Leonardo Dicaprio and Tom Cruise.
New Mexico’s post was in response to Michigan not revealing its depth chart ahead of the showdown. The Lobos’ fake depth chart included iconic characters such as Forrest Gump, Jerry McGuire and Jack Dawson.
Most programs release their depth charts each week ahead of games, but Michigan stopped following this practice after Jim Harbaugh‘s second year at the helm of the program. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore carried over this practice into his tenure.
New Mexico might regret its decision to poke fun at Michigan. The Wolverines are 34.5-point favorites against the Lobos, and carrying plenty of momentum into the season.
Michigan finished the 2024 campaign on a tear, winning back-to-back games against Ohio State and Alabama. The team is returning 13 starters, and addressed its weakness from last season: quarterback.
Michigan averaged the fourth-least passing yards per game in the country last season. The only three teams that averaged fewer yards per games were service academies.

In turn, Michigan reeled in a commitment from Bryce Underwood, who was the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting cycle. On Sunday, Underwood was named the Wolverines’ starting quarterback. Sherrone Moore is excited to see the standout freshman lead his team into battle.
“Bryce took the necessary steps and really took the position,” Moore said. “Took ownership of his abilities and took ownership of the team and became a leader on the team and a guy that guys look to. Just did the things the right way. Used his skill and never tried to do too much. For a young guy, very mature, beyond his years, and he’s still only 18 years old.
““He’s going to make mistakes, but that’s what we’re here for. Coaches and players, we’re all going to support him as he goes on this journey… And we go on this journey together, but he’s earned that job.”
Michigan had a tumultuous season last year in Moore’s first campaign at the helm. At one point, the team had a 5-5 record. With a year of experience under his belt, Moore is hungry to return Michigan to its former heights.
Michigan and New Mexico will square off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The game will air live on NBC.
