The New Orleans Saints are expected to hire Texas secondary coach Terry Joseph, sources told On3 on Monday morning. The Longhorns’ defensive pass game coordinator has previously made stints as a defensive backs coach at Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas A&M, North Carolina and Notre Dame. This is his first NFL job.

Joseph comes from a football coaching family as his cousin Vance Joseph is the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos, and another cousin, Mickey Joseph, is the head coach at Grambling State. A New Orleans native, Joseph went to college at Northwestern State and later coached at Louisiana Tech and LSU.

Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron won the Jim Thorpe Award in 2024, going to the top defensive back in college football. Barron posted five interceptions and 67 tackles as the Longhorns’ secondary allowed 173.8 yards per game. Texas posted 22 interceptions in 2024 and ranked No. 3 in points allowed per game at 15.31.

In 2023, Terrance Brooks, Jerrin Thompson and Michael Taaffe led Texas with three interceptions a piece, while the Longhorns as a whole tallied 16 interceptions, the 10th-most in the nation. Taaffee was an AP Second Team All-American in 2024.

Joseph’s departure marks another coaching change for Texas. Safeties coach Blake Gideon recently took the Georgia Tech defensive coordinator job and Tashard Choice is the new running backs coach for the Detroit Lions.
