Sooners Football: How will Jackson Arnold bouneback vs. Tulane?

Brent Venables has a long list of injuries to deal with heading into the Week 3 Tulane matchup, specifically on the offensive side. One of the more impactful ones has been wide receiver Nic Anderson, who has been dealing with a quad injury. Anderson has not played against Temple or Houston.

Potentially some good news on Wednesday as Venables revealed he is hopeful Anderson can return against Tulane. The wide receiver practiced on Tuesday and was working with the team. A positive update from the head coach just a few days ahead of kickoff.

“He practiced yesterday,” Venables said during the SEC Coaches Teleconference. “He looked good. So, hopefully, he’ll continue to progress. He practiced in team settings and stuff. so, we’re hopeful.”

Anderson was a big-time threat in the Oklahoma offense last season, being the team’s second-leading receiver. He finished with 38 receptions for 798 yards, averaging 21 yards per reception. Hauling in 10 touchdowns was impressive as well, tying with Drake Stoops for the team lead.

Venables did speak on Anderson’s status earlier in the week, saying there was a chance he would return on Saturday. In a scenario where he cannot play against Tulane, Anderson should be back for Oklahoma’s SEC opener against Tennessee.

“We’re hopeful that Nic Anderson will be available really soon,” Venables said on Monday. “If it’s not this week, it will for sure be next week.”

Oklahoma has missed his explosiveness through two games. The offense has not been up to standard in Norman, hoping for a better performance against Tulane. Getting Anderson back on the field would be a major boost, mainly for first-year starting quarterback Jackson Arnold.

Flashing back to last year’s Alamo Bowl against Arizona, Arnold and Anderson were one of the top duos on the field. Anderson caught seven passes for 73 yards and found the endzone late in the second quarter. The Sooners will need them to click right away when the receiver officially returns from his injury.
