Ahead of the Notre Dame game against Louisville, head coach Marcus Freeman shared an injury update on two players, Cooper Flanagan and Josh Burnham, who are dealing with issues going into the week.

Unfortunately, as Freeman explained in his injury update, tight end Cooper Flanagan won’t be able to play in the game due to an issue with his ankle Then, defensive lineman Josh Burnham is currently questionable with an undisclosed issue.

“Couple injury updates,” Marcus Freeman said. “Cooper Flanagan will be out this week with a left ankle injury and Josh Burnham is still questionable as we go into this week.”

Cooper Flanagan has been Notre Dame’s starting tight end in the first four weeks of the season. That comes after he played in 13 games as a freshman. During the 2024 season, he’s made three receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown. His absence is going to be notable, though the Irish are deep at tight end and Mitchell Evans is more than capable of replacing his production.

For his part, Josh Burnham has missed the last two games after playing 53 snaps against Northern Illinois in Week 2. So, the hope is that he can get back and be a key piece of the rotation again soon. At the same time, even if he is able to play, it will likely be fewer snaps than he was getting to start the season. In that time, he made four total tackles.

Graduate student RJ Oben and freshman Bryce Young are among the players who have been working to fill the gap that Josh Burnham left along the Notre Dame defensive line.

Along with those injuries, Marcus Freeman also shared that Notre Dame defensive back Jaden Mickey is going to redshirt the rest of the season with the intention of entering the Transfer Portal. This comes after he appeared in 28 career games for the Irish.

“Jaden Mickey made a decision that he felt was best for him,” Freeman said. “For me to do anything other than support him would be selfish… I wish him the best of luck. I love him.”

Notre Dame and Marcus Freeman are getting ready to play a vital game against Louisville. It’s a game that the Irish lost last season on the road. On top of that, after already dropping a game this season, Notre Dame can’t afford another loss as it tries to get in position to make the College Football Playoff.
