Notre Dame defeats Penn State to advance to College Football Playoff national title game

Notre Dame and Penn State meet Thursday night in Coral Gables in the Orange Bowl with a spot in the College Football Playoff national championship game up for grabs. Both teams hosted first-round CFP games and picked up wins in the quarterfinals.

The Nittany Lions blew past Boise State in the quarterfinals, shutting down the nation’s top running back Ashton Jeanty. The Fighting Irish’s quarterfinal matchup with Georgia was postponed a day because of the New Orleans New Year’s Day truck attack, but they pieced together an impressive 23-10 win.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The winner will meet the winner of Ohio State-Texas in the CFP national title game on Monday, Jan. 20 in Atlanta.

Entering the locker room at halftime, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman did not have an update on his starting quarterback Riley Leonard.

“They’re going to check him out right now,” Freeman told ESPN’s Molly McGrath. “They just told me right before the field goal, they don’t have an answer right now, what it’s gonna be. … The game plan will still be the same. We’ll have less quarterback-designed runs. We’re confident in Steve if Steve has to go. If Riley can go, we’re confident in Riley.”
