Meechie Johnson is on his second stint at Ohio State. That second one is now over, though, with a decision to re-enter his name into the portal.

Johnson will enter his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal, On3 has learned. That news comes on Friday per On3’s Joe Tipton.

“NEWS: Ohio State guard Meechie Johnson Jr. is entering the transfer portal, he told @On3sports,” Tipton tweeted this morning.

Johnson has played for five collegiate seasons with two at Ohio State, two at South Carolina, and then this most recent one back at Ohio State. In total over 116 games with the Buckeyes and Gamecocks, Johnson has averaged 9.2 points (37% FG, 33.1% 3PT), 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

While in Columbus, Johnson posted 4.3 points (33.3% FG, 34.9% 3PT), 1.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists. He didn’t play that much during his first two seasons with the program and then, during his third following his return last offseason, he took a leave of absence for personal matters in December that he’d never return from. That ended this season for him with stats of 9.1 points (35.6% FG, 35.7% 3PT), 2.7 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals.

Johnson was actually a much better player in his pair of seasons in Columbia. He put up 13.4 points (38.1% FG, 32.4% 3PT), 3.9 rebounds, and 3.2 assists as a full-time starter for the Gamecocks. With that, he was top two in scoring in both seasons, including their leading scorer in one, and was their leader in assists in the other. That also earned him honors as All-SEC Second Team for his play in ’23-’24.

That’s all after Johnson, a Cleveland native, played high school basketball at Andrews Osborne Academy in Willoughby. He was the No. 161 overall recruit there as a three-star prospect in the 2020 cycle. He was also rated as the No. 31 PG in the class and the No. 3 player out of Ohio. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. It also made him the lowest-rated out of a class of three signees for the Buckeyes in ’20.

This is now the third departure in the portal during this cycle for the Buckeyes. Evan Mahaffey and Austin Parks have also elected to transfer elsewhere during the last ten days. Meanwhile, as for additions, Ohio State did earn a commitment from Gabe Cupps (Indiana) on Wednesday.

Neither span over three years total fully worked out for Johnson at Ohio State. Because of that, he’ll be looking for another program to play for in his sixth collegiate season with it being his final one of eligibility.
