Oklahoma State and Missouri State break NCAA combined runs record for tournament game
In an elimination game of the Stillwater Regional, the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Missouri State Bears played an incredible, back and forth contest that ended in a 29-15 final score. Regardless of the outcome, both teams ended up making history this afternoon.
The Bears got the bats hot early with nine runs in the bottom of the second. While it was where the majority of the runs were scored, they cooled off as the game progressed. The Cowboys, though? They were just getting started with an average of 4.8 runs across the final six innings. That included a pair of seven run innings at the top of the sixth and ninth.
Oklahoma State will move on from the high scoring affair to play Arkansas in a rematch from a 20-12 loss to the Razorbacks on Saturday.
WATCH: Oklahoma State comes back from 12 down, takes lead over Missouri State with grand slam
When these two teams first met in the Regional, Oklahoma State‘s season appeared on the verge of ending at one point as the Cowboys found themselves down 12-0 to Missouri State. Just three innings later, the Cowboys stormed back to take the lead.
After OSU had already scored three runs in the top of the sixth cut the deficit to 14-13, Griffin Doersching stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. You can likely guess what happened next, as the designated hitter blasted a ball deep over the center field fence to complete the grand slam and give Oklahoma State its first lead of the game at 17-13.

After going scoreless over the first three innings, the Cowboys went on to score 17 of their runs in innings 4-6. The defense also limited the Bears to just two runs during that span after surrendering a combined 12 in the second and third. A big part of that turnaround came when Trevor Martin entered to pitch midway through the third inning. So far, he has struck out 13 in just 5.2 innings of work.
Oklahoma State found itself in a big hole after giving up three home runs in the second and third innings, including a grand slam from Cam Cratic that gave Missouri State a 9-0 lead to end the second. OSU played three different pitchers in the first three innings before finally landing on Martin and deciding to stick with him.
OSU went on to win 29-15 to face Arkansas at 7 p.m. Sunday evening in yet another elimination game. The Razorbacks handed Oklahoma State a 20-12 loss on Saturday, so revenge would definitely be on the Cowboys’ minds.
