Oklahoma made a lot of headlines, like Auburn, following last week’s loss to Tennessee. The benching of quarterback Jackson Arnold in favor of true freshman Michael Hawkins was an eye opening move.

Similar to Oklahoma, Auburn went back and forth at quarterback with Hugh Freeze reenlisting Payton Thorne as his starter.

“Jackson’s going to have an amazing future and career,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said. “He’s going to play this game a long time and all of that will work itself out in due time.”

Still, Venables did shar he will start Hawkins instead of Arnold for Oklahoma’s next game against Auburn. That will be the first game that Hawkins ever starts during his college career and he’ll be tasked with getting the Sooners offense rolling in SEC play.

Just a sophomore, Jackson Arnold came to Oklahoma as a five-star recruit in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Rating. With that has come massive expectations on Arnold and expectations that he’ll thrive at the college level.

Former Georgia standout David Pollack questioned how Auburn handled its QB situation as well, putting the blame on Freeze.

“The quarterback play has been bad for a while, they’ve got to find some kind of consistency there,” Pollack said. “But again, go to recruiting. Auburn’s had some success on the recruiting trail and Hugh Freeze has been able to say we’re building and this year two, like we’re going to ascend. And now, when you watch this, I think you’re going to have severe doubt. And some of the kids that have committed, I think it’s just going to be really hard.”

Oklahoma and Auburn are set for a 3:45 p.m. ET kickoff at Jordan Hare Stadium.
