Tennessee vs. Oklahoma Preview & Prediction

Oklahoma hosts Tennessee in a marquee SEC showdown — the first ever for the Sooners in the league. And more than that, it also marks the return of Josh Heupel to Norman as the Volunteers head coach.

Along with the former Oklahoma national championship-winning quarterback and offensive coordinator making his return, ESPN’s College GameDay will be on hand for the ranked showdown between undefeated teams. Playing on a primetime stage, the white-hot Volunteers and supremely talented Sooners will have an early chance to make a big statement.

And to do that, it’s easiest with a healthy team. Unfortunately for both teams, perfect health is not quite in the picture as SEC play begins and each team released injury reports on Wednesday evening.

The big news for the Sooners hinges around wideout Nic Anderson, who has yet to feature so far in three games this season due to an injury. It was hinted that he could make his return this weekend, and his status is looking good with his inclusion as “probable” on Wednesday.

Anderson practiced last week and head coach Brent Venables was “hopeful” about his status, but Anderson did not play on Saturday. Even still, his quarterback said the wideout keeps teasing a potential return.

“I was talking to him about it today,” Jackson Arnold said Tuesday. “You know, he’s been teasing me for the past couple of weeks. He’s like, ‘You know, I might play this Saturday?’ and then he hasn’t played for the past three weeks.”

Tennessee does have as many injuries of note, and the focus around the game has centered on Heupel’s return to Norman.

In that regard, the Volunteers head coach has had a good sense of humor.

“Should be a great crowd,” Heupel said, wryly. “It’s a passionate fan base. I’m expecting them to be extremely quiet for us, out of respect to me and our program, too.”

Joking aside, Heupel did take a moment to reflect on his return to a place where so much of his current success was seeded.

“It will be unique,” Heupel said. “I have teammates and friends back there. They hit me up a little bit early. They were starting last week already. It will be unique going back into that stadium. It’s going to be a (different) viewpoint. I am not sure I spent a day on the opposing sideline inside the stadium — not even for scrimmage. It will be different. But it is one that I am really looking forward to.

“There are so many people have been a huge part of my journey that I get a chance to go back and, hopefully, get a chance to say hi to a bunch of them. It starts with teammates. It’s coaches that I had. It’s a lot of coaches that I coached with. There’s lot of personnel that are still there. Guys that I coached. Guy that was in my wedding. There’s a lot of people back there that I’m familiar with and have a lot of respect for.”
