Bear McWhorter had the offers. Almost too many. Around 40 schools were on his list and it came down to Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Michigan and South Carolina, then in the end, he chose to head north to Ann Arbor and be a Wolverine.

This was somewhat of an upset. Alabama was his dream school, the buzz was around the Crimson Tide in recent weeks, but Michigan stayed consistent and landed the commitment.

“I have always liked Michigan,” McWhorter told On3. “My first time visiting was January of my freshman year, and they had just won the Joe Moore award, so that had my attention. When they really made their move was in the fall when I was there for the Oregon game. The game didn’t go their way, but I talked more with the coaches, I saw more of the culture and things took off from there.”

The decision came down to this week for the 6-foot-3, 308-pound offensive lineman out of Cartersville (Ga.) Cass.

“There were some changes for me since I set my commitment date. I kept talking to the coaches, talking with my family and it came down to being a part of that blue-collar mentality at Michigan.

“The players are a lot like me, the vibe is awesome up there and the guys in the programs are guys I am ready to war with every day. I love the people and it is an environment I feel I can thrive in.”

The combination of Grant Newsome and Sherrone Moore played a big role in McWhorter’s decision.

“Coach Newsome talks to me every day. He is a very personable guy, I can go to him about anything and we have gotten really close. I trust him, I like who he is and I believe in him.

“Coach Moore was a huge factor too. He is a great head coach who has had a lot of success coaching offensive linemen. I really like how they develop offensive linemen, the culture is great and I really want to be a part of it.”

Michigan is a blue blood in college football. It has a lot of history. McWhorter can’t want to be a part of it.

“Everyone that reps that block M is very proud of it and it goes a long way,” McWhorter said. “Michigan is an amazing place. Seeing what the team looks like lifting together showed me a lot. I love how they work together and how they love each other. That made me want to be a part of that.”
