Mississippi State recently made a major change, firing head coach Zach Arnett after less than a full season and elevating Greg Knox to interim head coach. The Bulldogs got their first win since Oct. 21 on Saturday, defeating Southern Miss 41-20 in Knox’s first game as interim coach.
It was a run-heavy attack on offense for Mississippi State. Will Rogers only threw the ball 27 times, completing 12 passes for 144 yards while adding two touchdowns. But the Bulldogs did most of their work on the ground, led by 98 yards and a touchdown from Jeffrey Pittman, as they ran the ball 45 times to get the victory.
As for Ole Miss, it wasn’t easy going in the first half of Saturday’s game against Louisiana-Monroe. The Rebels turned it around, though, and came away with the 35-3 victory. It was a 7-3 game at halftime, but 21 points in the third quarter helped Ole Miss get some separation en route to its ninth win of the season. A win in the Egg Bowl would give Ole Miss another 10-win season under Lane Kiffin, and the quest for an 11-win season is on.

The game is shaping up to be an emotional one. It will mark the first game between Ole Miss and Mississippi State since the sudden death of Mike Leach over the offseason. Appropriately enough, last year’s Egg Bowl was his final game — and final victory.
