Ole Miss responds to Lane Kiffin’s Coca-Cola comments with new podium prop
Ole Miss‘ Lane Kiffin and LSU‘s Brian Kelly have been in a beverage back and forth following Kiffin’s comments last week about Coca-Cola, which Kelly responded to at his next press conference when he took the podium.
Kiffin jokingly made a comment about the amount of sugar in Coca-Cola and how unhealthy the soda is when looking at a bottle on the podium at the end press conference. Which led to Kelly giving a full endorsement of smartwater, another Coke product, the next time he spoke to the media.
But the ball is now back in the Tigers’ court, with Ole Miss adding an additional bottle of Coke to Kiffin’s podium ahead of his Monday press conference. Specifically a Coke Zero following Kiffin’s comments regarding sugar. A likely intentional move adding another chapter to the saga between the SEC head coaches that can be seen below.
“Does anybody drink Coke?” Kiffin asked last week. “You realize that 130% of your sugar for the entire day is in this one bottle? 65 grams of sugar.”

Coke’s sugar-free alternative now takes the podium alongside Kiffin, who also added that it has been a long time since he’s drank Coca-Cola. But for Kelly, smartwater has clearly always been an alternative to Coke that he can get behind.

“Just a shout out to our sponsor, Coke,” Kelly said on Wednesday to open his press conference. “Smartwater, great Coke product. Minerals, vitamins. It’s just great for you. It’s refreshing. Healthy and Coke provides you all the products that you need, depending on what you like, and I love smartwater.”
Kelly followed his endorsement by taking a swig of a smartwater bottle following a hot fall camp practice in Baton Rouge. Showing his allegiance to the Coca-Cola sponsorship and likely giving the brand some exposure in his ambiguous response to Kiffin.
Beverages aside, Ole Miss and LSU had one of the most exciting matchups in the SEC last college football season. A back-and-forth shootout that the Rebels were able to come out on top of at home in a 55-49 victory where both teams combined for 1,343 yards of total offense.
Kelly and Kiffin will meet once again this upcoming year with hopes of their defenses playing a little bit better than they did last season, squaring off on October 12 at Tiger Stadium.
