Ole Miss transfer running back Matt Jones signed with Southern Miss, On3’s Pete Nakos has learned. He spent four years in Oxford, totaling more than 300 career yards.

Jones entered the portal Dec. 18 after the most impactful season of his career. Across seven appearances, he totaled 226 rushing yards and three touchdowns as he became a key contributor in the Ole Miss backfield. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

In 2023, Jones appeared in 12 games while taking on a key role on the Ole Miss special teams unit. He totaled 79 rushing yards and two touchdowns during his time with the offense as a redshirt sophomore that season.

The On3 Transfer Portal Instagram account and Twitter account are excellent resources to stay up to date with the latest moves.

Jones played high school football at Flowood (Miss.) Jackson Prep before arriving at Ole Miss 2021 as a non-scholarship player. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Matt Jones announced his plans to enter the transfer portal Dec. 18, shortly before his name officially showed up in the database. He also released a statement explaining his decision.

“Dear Rebel Nation,” Jones wrote. “Thank you for all you have done for me and my family these past 4 years! Words cannot describe how thankful I am to have been a part of this community and program. To Coach [Kevin] Smith and Coach [Lane] Kiffin, thank you for your guidance and providing me with this opportunity. I will finish the season strong with my brothers.”

“With that being said, I will be entering the Transfer Portal as a grad transfer with 1 year of eligibility remaining! Thank you and Hotty Toddy forever! Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not evil, to give you a future and hope.”

Jones is the second Ole Miss transfer to sign with Southern Miss out of the portal this cycle. Micah Davis also signed with the Eagles last week after appearing in every game in 2024, finishing with five catches for 57 yards. He also served as the team’s primary punt returner with 18 returns total on the year.
