Omaha Basketball unveils ridiculous trash can promotion for February game
Ever had a craving for popcorn so insatiable that you felt like you needed an entire trash can’s worth of the delectable snack just to get by? Well, you’re in luck.
That is, if you’re in the Omaha, Neb., on Saturday.
Omaha Athletics announced a very, very unique one-time promotion that will allow fans to collect and eat popcorn to their heart’s content. Using a trash can. Yep, you read that right.
It’s a promo borne out of a team celebration that has gone viral this year.
The Mavericks have won nine straight games, including seven in conference play, to jump out to the lead in the Summit League Standings. Along the way a team celebration caught fire.
It’s unclear exactly when it began, but coach Kyan Brown was filmed in the post-game locker room after a win over South Dakota State unveiling the latest iteration of it.
Brown took a small trash can and lined it up on the ‘O’ on the floor in the center of the locker room. Then he began lining up as if he was to take a field goal kick on it. Sure enough, he backed up and booted the trash can into the wall, to thunderous applause from his players.

Players have taken the trash can celebrations to the next level, spiking them, kicking them and just generally celebrating like wild using a trash can as a prop.
So back to the promotion… now the fans can get in on it too. With a twist.
Fans will be allowed to bring a single five-gallon trash can (or smaller) to the arena on Feb. 1 for a game against Denver. With that trash can, they’ll be able to fill up with popcorn from SAVOR, the exclusive concessionaire at Baxter Arena, then eat until they’re completely full. It’ll only cost $5 for a fill-up.
Omaha Athletics does note that all trash cans must be clean and sanitized prior to entering the venue. Nasty trash cans can be refused service for health reasons.
Will the promotion keep the mojo going and keep the trash-can-kicking tradition rolling? That remains to be seen. But there will likely be some happy fans in Omaha come Saturday. And some greasy popcorn fingers.
