On3 2023 basketball rankings update headlined by new five-stars
On3 has released the latest update of its basketball prospect rankings for the 2023 cycle. This rankings release is the third update in the 2023 cycle. This ranking is heavily impacted by the April live period, and spring and early summer events.
This update is also an expansion of the On3 2023 rankings from 100 to the Top 150. On3 heavily prioritized the high school junior season for in-person evaluations ahead of the spring and summer AAU seasons. And now we combine them all to expand the list.
Updated On3 Top 150 for the class of 2023
The basketball player rankings scale is as follows: Five-star prospects have grades 98-100, four-star recruits have grades 90-97, while 80-89 grades are for three stars.
The first 10 prospects are five stars with a rating of 98 or higher. The rankings for current cycles will be updated on a regular schedule throughout the year with 20 five stars by the final ranking of a cycle.
Our goal is to assess a prospect’s long-term potential in college basketball, ultimately manifested by the NBA draft.
Let’s get into some of the storylines surrounding the On3 Top 100.
GG Jackson remains the unanimous No. 1
G.G. Jackson of Columbia (S.C.) Ridge View ascended to the top of the On3 rankings March 14, and there is not sign of that changing.
The 6-foot-8, 210-power forward continues to display an ability to play on the perimeter off the bounce, and that sets him apart in the class. He is a threat from three off the catch, and he can create space and get clean looks off the dribble. He stands out in iso-situations in the half court. Jackson has been physical in the paint, strong with the ball, and he scores in traffic. He plays with very good balance, and plays through contact at a high-end level. Jackson will also rebound outside his area. He’s developed into a sure-fire NBA prospect this season with the expanded offensive game.

Jackson committed to North Carolina April 27 in what was a huge win for the Tar Heels over Duke and South Carolina.
When it came down to making the call, Jackson was again the unanimous pick for the top spot.
New 5-stars added
Five prospects added a fifth star in the latest update for the 2023 cycle. The headline is best defensive big man in high school basketball, regardless of classification. Scoring in the paint can be defined as very difficult against Ugonna Kinglsey. Kinglsey is not like any other defender we have seen in the past few years due to a complete skill set defensively. His ability to move his feet, the dexterity to block with both hands, and his timing/vertical pop have him protecting the rim, and sliding with guards on the same possession. Kentucky, Kansas, UConn and LSU are among the top schools contending for the new No. 5 overall.
Checking in at No. 9 after being unranked is versatile guard A.J. Johnson. The 6-foot-4.5 silky smooth guard can run a team, and also score effectively and efficiently off the ball. His speed in the open floor with the ball, and when he sees a straight line opportunity is similar to former Purdue star Jaden Ivey. Johnson not only has speed in the open floor, but quickness and wiggle in the half court. He has proven to be a three level scorer this spring and early summer. Johnson is the workout partner and “little brother” of Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green.
