J.D. PicKell's College Football Playoff Rankings After Week 3

The 2024 Heisman Trophy race is well underway and unfortunately it’s becoming clear that injuries may take their toll on the race.

On3’s national experts have been closely monitoring some of the biggest outings of the season and have started to look for consistency from week to week. Today, they compile their poll of the top 10 candidates.

Each of the five national experts submitted a ballot with his top 10 players on it, and we’ve compiled the results to create a complete ranking using points — 10 points for a first-place vote, nine for second, etc. Let’s get into how the rankings unfolded below.

1. QB Cam Ward, Miami – 48 points

After taking the second spot in this poll a week ago, Ward rises to the top spot, in part due to the injury Quinn Ewers suffered that limited his production this week. Ward went out and continued to do what he did through the first two weeks.

Namely, that’s making plays. The Miami signal-caller threw for a season-high five touchdowns against Ball State, while notching 346 yards passing. He keeps that up he’ll remain a Heisman Trophy favorite.

2. QB Jalen Milroe, Alabama – 40

Milroe jumped up seven spots in this week’s poll, testament to improved competition and improved performance. Against Wisconsin, Milroe was excellent and helped Alabama to an easy road win.

The Alabama dual-threat dynamo has accounted for at least two rushing touchdowns in every game so far. He’s also throw for 590 yards and eight scores, putting up well-rounded performances from under center.

3. QB Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss – 37

Dart also moves up a spot from last week’s poll, courtesy of Ewers’ slip and continued strong performance. Dart hasn’t faced crazy competition just yet, but he did go on the road to smack Wake Forest this weekend.

How consistent has Dart been? Well, he threw for exactly 377 yards for a second straight week. He also scored a third rushing touchdown this season, now sitting at one per week.

4. RB Ashton Jeanty, Boise State – 34

Boise State had a bye week this week, so Jeanty was off. It was some well-earned time off after his first two games of the year, too.

Jeanty is second nationally in rushing yardage despite having a bye already, while he currently is tied for the national lead with nine touchdowns. That figure matches Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson, who appears later on this list.

5. QB Quinn Ewers, Texas – 33

The Texas starting quarterback exited a game against UTSA in the second quarter with what would later be deemed as an abdominal injury. That kept his production fairly low and the uncertainty surrounding the injury helps cause Ewers to slide a bit in this week’s Heisman Trophy polling.

Ewers threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns with one interception against the Roadrunners. On the season Ewers now has 691 yards passing and eight touchdowns, against two interceptions.

6. CB/WR Travis Hunter, Colorado – 27

Hunter remains in the same position in this week’s Heisman Trophy polling, right at No. 6 nationally. As long as he remains healthy don’t expect him to leave this top 10.

The talented two-way player had his most productive day yet, racking up impressive results on both sides of the ball. On offense, Hunter recorded a season-high 13 catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, he made five tackles, picked off a pass and broke up another. Impressive stuff.

7. QB Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee – 21

Iamaleava drops a couple spots in this week’s ranking, but that’s more a product of his competition and a short day than anything else. Iamaleava didn’t need to be out there for very long against Kent State.

The Tennessee quarterback went 10-of-16 passing for 173 yards and a touchdown, while rushing five times for 31 yards. On the season he’s at 698 passing yards with six touchdowns, as well as 102 rushing yards and a score.

8. QB Miller Moss, USC – 13

Like Jeanty, Moss was on a bye this week so he wasn’t able to further pad his stats. That he remains on the list speaks to what he did in the first two weeks to impress the Heisman Trophy voters.

Moss has thrown for 607 yards and two touchdowns. Not gaudy numbers, by any means, but the tape is excellent. He was crisp and accurate in a marquee win over LSU in the season opener.

9. QB Garrett Nussmeier, LSU – 6

LSU probably doesn’t climb out of a 17-point hole against South Carolina without the gutsy play of Nussmeier. He was beaten to a pulp in the game by a highly effective Gamecocks pass rush, yet managed to hang in there and make the winning plays.

Nussmeier went 24-of-40 passing for 285 yards and two touchdowns against the Gamecocks. He did throw an interception, but he was the steady presence that helped the Tigers weather a storm on the road.

10. QB Carson Beck, Georgia – 5

Beck drops down from No. 7 last week to No. 10 this week after a relatively pedestrian performance against Kentucky. The good news? Georgia withstood a really good effort from Kentucky to win a close game on the road.

So long as Beck keeps winning he’ll remain in the conversation, because he’s capable of putting up big days against some opponents. This week it was just a 15-of-24 passing day for 160 yards, with no touchdowns but also no interceptions.

Also Receiving Votes

QB Kyle McCord, Syracuse – 4
WR Tetairoa McMillan, Arizona – 3
QB Dillon Gabriel, Oregon – 3
RB Dylan Sampson, Tennessee – 2
WR Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State – 1

There are a handful of standout performers among the also receiving votes category, and any of them could conceivably play their way into the thick of the Heisman Trophy race. McCord has been a monster so far at a much-resurgent Syracuse. Gabriel has all the talent in the world and is on a playoff contender. Sampson might steal some shine from his teammate, Nico Iamaleava. And Smith is one of the most talented freshmen in the country. A really, really solid group overall.
