The 2024 Heisman Trophy race is well underway and we have some shakeups with some of the top candidates.

On3’s national experts have been closely monitoring some of the biggest outings of the season and have started to look for consistency from week to week. Today, they compile their poll of the top 10 candidates.

Each of the five national experts submitted a ballot with his top 10 players on it, and we’ve compiled the results to create a complete ranking using points — 10 points for a first-place vote, nine for second, etc. Let’s get into how the rankings unfolded below.

1. CB/WR Travis Hunter, Colorado – 47 points

Last week was a tremendous week for Hunter and he managed to top it this week with an even more impressive performance. Hunter is getting it done on both sides of the ball, too.

This week Hunter went for seven catches for 130 yards on offense, while turning in three tackles and a game-winning forced fumble on defense. Elite, in every sense of the word, and he takes the top spot this week after checking in at No. 6 last week.

2. QB Cam Ward, Miami – 46

Ward drops off the top spot, but by just a hair. His actual point total from a week ago barely dropped, sagging just two points. And that’s because Ward continues to impress.

Miami was in a competitive game against USF early, then Ward turned on the afterburners and the ‘Canes pulled away easily. Ward threw for 404 yards and three touchdowns, though he did throw his second interception of the season. He also ran for 43 yards.

3. QB Jalen Milroe, Alabama – 36

Alabama was off this weekend, so Milroe didn’t get a chance to pad his stats. But he will get a chance to have a statement game this week, with Georgia on tap.

Through the first three games, Milroe has accounted for two rushing touchdowns in each game. He has also thrown for 590 yards and eight touchdowns. Keep up that production and he’ll be a Heisman Trophy finalist.

4. RB Ashton Jeanty, Boise State – 34

The Boise State running back had a significantly lighter workload against Portland State, seeing only 11 carries after getting at least 20 in both of the first two games. He made the most of his touches, though.

Jeanty ran for 127 yards on those 11 carries. That is right in line with his season average of 10.5 yards per carry, an eye-popping average. If that continues he’ll be hard to keep out of New York.

5. QB Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss – 31

Few Heisman Trophy candidates have faced as relatively easy a non-conference slate as Dart at Ole Miss. Outside of a road trip to Wake Forest, no one has come close to slowing the Rebels. And even that was a 40-6 win.

Dart is piling up major numbers, having logged 1,554 passing yards and 12 touchdowns, against just two interceptions. Dart leads the nation in passing by almost 30 yards per game right now.

6. QB Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee – 14

Iamaleava isn’t necessarily putting up huge numbers every week, but he has mostly made the right decisions for the Volunteers and has showed a maturity beyond his years. Tennessee looks poised to keep winning, which means Iamaleava will keep getting Heisman Trophy talk.

On the season, Iamaleava now has 892 yards rushing and seven touchdowns, against two interceptions. He’s also run for 117 yards and a touchdown and is a bona fide threat with his legs.

7. QB Quinn Ewers, Texas – 11

Ewers missed his first game with an abdominal injury. Depending on how long he’s out, that ailment could put a significant damper on his Heisman Trophy chances.

Still, Heisman Trophy voters aren’t likely to forget Ewers’ near-flawless performance in a road win at Michigan. That gets him in the hunt if he can return to action in short order.

8. QB Garrett Nussmeier, LSU – 10

It’s hard to take over for a Heisman Trophy winner, particularly when you also lose two first-round picks at receiver. Nussmeier has made it seem like child’s play so far. He’s been effective all season long.

On Saturday, he had a 352-yard day against UCLA, a season high. He threw for three touchdowns and did not throw an interception. That brings him to 13 touchdowns and two interceptions on the season.

9. CB Will Johnson, Michigan – 9

The Michigan cornerback is one of the nation’s lockdown prospects. Many teams don’t even attempt to throw at him. USC did on Saturday and regretted it, with Johnson recording his second interception of the season and returning it 42 yards.

Johnson did miss the team’s final two drives of the game against the Trojans, and coach Sherrone Moore confirmed he had a minor injury. Whether that injury slows Johnson at all will bear monitoring.

T-10. RB Kalel Mullings, Michigan – 8

It’s not easy sharing a backfield with one of college football’s best players, but Mullings has done just that. And done a remarkable job of it, really. He has outshined Donovan Edwards through the first four games.

Mullings got his largest workload yet against USC, rushing 17 times for 159 yards and two scores. He also caught a pass for two yards. On the season, Mullings is already at 429 yards rushing with four touchdowns — averaging more than 100 yards per game.

T-10. QB John Mateer, Washington State – 8

Washington State is out to a 4-0 start, and Mateer helped preserve that by battling in a double-overtime game against San Jose State on Friday night. Mateer is putting up absurd numbers and might just be the most productive dual-threat quarterback in the country.

So far, through four games, Mateer has thrown for 1,102 yards and 11 touchdowns, against four interceptions. That’s strong. Then there’s his 425 yards rushing and five scores on the ground. He’s doing it all for the Cougars.

QB Carson Beck, Georgia – 8
QB Dillon Gabriel, Oregon – 3
WR Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State – 2
QB Drew Allar, Penn State – 2
QB Cade Klubnik, Clemson – 1
QB Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt – 1
RB Dylan Sampson, Tennessee – 1

There are a handful of players who could make a case to be in the top 10 of the Heisman Trophy poll right now, but they’ll have to do more in the coming weeks to prove their case. Beck will get a chance with a huge showdown with Alabama this week. Finally, a couple of skill position players get some love in Smith and Sampson — both are having outstanding seasons.
