Oral Roberts celebrates trip to the CWS for first time in 45 years

The No. 4 seed Oral Roberts Golden Eagles magical 2023 campaign continues. The Golden Eagles defeated the Oregon Ducks 11-6 on Sunday evening in Game 3 of their Eugene Super Regional to punch their tickets to the 2023 College World Series. It marks the first time Oral Roberts has made an appearance in the CWS since 1978 and just the second time in program history. With their win on Sunday evening, they also tied the school record for the most wins as a Division I program (51 wins). It also marked their 21st road victory of the 2023 campaign.

In the Stillwater Regional, ORU defeated Oklahoma State, Washington, and Dallas Baptist. During the Stillwater Regional, the Golden Eagles became the only NCAA team in history since 1999 to topple a No. 1 seed as a No. 4 seed in the opening round three times.

In winning that, they punched their tickets to their first Super Regional since 2006 against the 2023 Pac-12 Tournament Champions, the Oregon Ducks. It took three games for the Golden Eagles to finish off the Ducks in front of their home fans. In Game 3 of the series, Oregon slugger Cabin Ceballos set the new program single season record for home runs. With the loss, Oregon wrapped up their season with a 41-22 overall record. The Ducks were attempting to become the first team in school history to make it to Omaha since 1954.

As a No. 4 seed, Oral Roberts became just the third No. 4 seed to reach the College World Series since 1999. The Golden Eagles joined Fresno State (2008) and Stony Brook (2012) as the only teams to accomplish the feat.

With the win, Oral Roberts improved to 51-12 overall this season. They currently have the second most wins in all of college baseball behind Wake Forest. It’s just the fifth time in program history ORU has notched 50 wins on the season and it’s the first time since 2004.

The Golden Eagles joined a stacked field in Omaha in the 2023 College World Series. They joined No. 1 overall seed Wake Forest, the No. 2 seed Florida Gators, the No. 7 seed Virginia Cavaliers, the TCU Horned Frogs, and the No. 5 seed LSU Tigers. The games will begin on Friday, June 16th at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.

Oral Roberts has put up some impressive offensive numbers this year. They’ve currently got five batters that have posted double digit home runs in the 2023 campaign. It should be interesting to see how they finish this year.
