On3 Industry five-star safety Trey McNutt commits to Oregon
Shaker Heights (Ohio) High On3 Industry five-star safety Trey McNutt announced his commitment to Oregon on Friday evening.
The 5-foot-11 1/2, 183-pound McNutt also strongly considered Texas A&M, USC, Ohio State and Florida.
“We’re going to Eugene man,” McNutt told On3. “Just their staff and their program, it fits me. What their program is about is what I want to be about.
“With what they’re building in their program they can go all the way.”
McNutt looks forward to helping Oregon take the next step
The On3 Industry tabs McNutt as the nation’s No. 2 safety and No. 20 prospect overall. He becomes commit No. 17 for head coach Dan Lanning and his staff in the 2025 class.
“They want to be great in that program,” McNutt said. “And the people around the program they’re all great people and they all have the same goals and they’re all fighting to get to their goals.”

McNutt visited Eugene a few times including the spring and return for his official in June. Lanning and Chris Hampton led the recruitment of McNutt to the program. Rashad Wadood and Tosh Lupoi were also pivotal.
“Coach Lanning he’s a good coach and he’s different,” McNutt said. “He’s different than most college head coaches. Really Coach Lanning and I just connected and you can tell he’s going to be a big-time coach in the future.
“Coach Hamp and Coach Lupoi both are amazing coaches and I feel with them I’m going to be developed well and go to the league. I trust them and I trust their staff and Coach Wadood. I’m just ready to work with them.”
Prior to McNutt’s commitment, Oregon had the On3 Industry’s No. 5 ranked recruiting class.
On3 Analysis of McNutt
The secondary is one of the strengths of this Oregon class as Brew joins fellow Top100 recruits in Dorian Brew and Brandon Finney.
Here is the On3 scouting report on McNutt.
“Rangy safety prospect who has the ability come downhill and be force player in the run game, play center field as a single high safety, or match up in man to man in the slot. Tremendous versatility in the secondary at the next level and beyond. Physical and violent player, not afraid to stick his head into traffic and make plays around the line of scrimmage. Excellent burst and trigger out of his backpedal. Strong ability to read and diagnose what offenses are doing in front of him. Need to see more from him in terms of ball production, but has excellent ball skills and ability to high point the football. Excellent upside with a frame that should be able to fill out with ease in a collegiate strength and conditioning program.”
