After a devastating loss to Northwestern to open their 2022 season in Ireland, Pat McAfee and Bobby Carpenter were quick to troll Nebraska. Nebraska lost their season opener by just three points, 31-28, in the 21st single-digit loss in coach Scott Frost’s time with the Cornhuskers.

The win matched Northwestern’s conference win total from all of last season in just one game this season. Adding to the frustration was a highly questionable coaching decision from Frost as Nebraska kicked a surprise onside kick with a 28-17 lead in the second half of the game. Northwestern was not fooled by the call and recovered the ball easily before capitalizing on the aggressive play with a quick touchdown.

The Cornhuskers’ lead was cut down to just four points, setting the stage for a late touchdown and win by the Wildcats in front of the Dublin crowd.

Pat McAfee and Bobby Carpenter weigh-in on Nebraska’s loss

Former NFL punter and media personality Pat McAfee shared a simple reaction to the loss, but it definitely was a stinging one. “Wow… Nebraska,” was all that McAfee had to say with a GIF image that summarized how most of the college football world was feeling after the game.

Scott Frost’s record in single-score games dropped to a brutal 5-21 record with the loss, as Nebraska lost their seventh-straight Big Ten Conference game. Frost is now 1-4 in season openers at Nebraska, and is now 3-21 when trailing at halftime. The Cornhuskers were down 17-14 at halftime of Saturday’s game, but quickly built their 28-17 lead before the ill-fated onside kick.

Bobby Carpenter — a former Big Ten standout from Ohio State and a member of the 2002 BCS Championship-winning Buckeyes — had a much more empathetic reaction to the tough loss.

“I don’t have the stomach to be a Nebraska fan… this is painful,” said Carpenter.

Frost answered candidly after the game about the decision to make the onside kick, taking ownership of the aggressive play call. Critics and fans of Nebraska were quick to point out during the game that a two-score lead as the favorites was not a situation where they expected the attempt.

“I made the call, so it’s on me. I thought if we got it, we could end the game,” said Frost.
