Paul Finebaum: Better chance the SEC sends two teams to the College Football Playoff than none
Paul Finebaum had some strong thoughts on the argument of two SEC teams in the College Football Playoff versus none if Alabama beats Georgia on Saturday.
The conundrum could become a reality if that result comes to fruition during the SEC title game. During a hit on ESPN’s Get Up, Finebaum made his point as to why it would be absurd for the SEC to miss the College Football Playoff entirely, and why it’s more likely the conference has two teams make it in.
“I think it’s better that they get 2. I don’t think that’ll happen, but I think the odds that the SEC gets shutout are just insane,” Finebaum put it emphatically. “I know people around the country are going, ‘Come on, how many times do we have to hear this from the South?’ But I live this everyday of the week. I know the difference in the SEC. … We just have to quit thinking like groups and this institutionalism, and put in the four best teams.
“I know they never do, but I’m going to keep asking for it.”
Alas, Finebaum’s comments echo what he said earlier in the week. He put it more bluntly then, but he believes there’s no shot the SEC is blocked from the College Football Playoff. None at all.
“Over my dead body,” Finebaum said. “That’s not happening, I am not going to allow it. I’ll stand outside that door in Grapevine, Texas and demand it.”
Regardless of Finebaum’s thoughts, this season would mark the first ever of the College Football Playoff era without any SEC teams making the cut if neither Georgia or Alabama made the top four.

A reality that would apparently force Finebaum to make his presence felt in the CFP selection committee meeting, which according to him does not have to do with his bias toward the Southeastern Conference.
“And I’m not saying that because I live and work in the SEC, but what I do know is that the SEC is the best conference,” Fineabum said. “I mean in the AP Poll yesterday I think five of the top 11 teams are from the SEC and you’re going to tell me that Florida State without its best player, which struggled against a seven-loss Florida team Saturday, should be in over Alabama or Georgia?”
“I mean that is preposterous and I don’t want to say they need to blow up the playoff because they already did and we’re having 12 [teams] next year, but it’d be patently absurd.”
Time will tell what side of the coin the SEC lands on, but we’re ever so close to finding out which teams are in the College Football Playoff. It’s going to be a fun weekend.
